Food Star shopping plaza has closed and will be redeveloped into a mixed-use project. The operator of the store has informed Arlington County they will relocate this business to Alexandria (206 W. Glebe Road; intersection at Mt. Vernon Ave). The new grocer coming to the George Mason Drive site, Harris Teeter, is scheduled to begin operations in late 2019.
About the Project
The applicant, Orr Partners, proposes to build a 6-story mixed-use building on the site currently occupied by the Food Star grocery store, other retail businesses and a surface parking lot. The proposal would include approximately 350 new residential units, 82,200 sq. ft. of ground floor retail including a new major grocer and three levels of below-grade parking. The development will also include a public square at the intersection of Columbia Pike and S. George Mason Drive.
The County Board approved the Columbia Pike Village Center on Feb. 20, 2016.
