Arlington’s Great Neighborhoods Didn’t Happen by Accident — They Happened by Design

Arlington has three primary planning areas that are located along major transportation routes: Columbia Pike and the two Metrorail corridors — Rosslyn-Ballston and the Jefferson Davis/U.S. Route 1. We also develop plans for other areas of the County where development is likely to occur or where it’s necessary to address specific issues.

We align thoughtful long-range planning with smart growth and urban design principles and extensive community input to concentrate development activity in key areas to help build a strong economy and thriving business districts. The majority of land in Arlington is dedicated to preserving residential neighborhoods.
